Mistakes You Shouldn’t Make in Your Career

I frequently hear similar stories from mothers of children with special needs. An autism diagnosis often leads to a quick decision to leave their full-time jobs, resulting in families struggling financially. After speaking with many moms and listening to various podcasts, I've noticed a common mindset: once their child receives an autism diagnosis, they believe quitting work is their only choice. While this decision may sometimes feel necessary, I want to empower these mothers by reminding them that career advancement is possible if they avoid these common pitfalls.
Making Impulsive Decisions Without Exploring Alternatives First
Once you resign, it may be challenging to return to your career. Investigate all options and strive to adapt your work situation to meet your child's needs before making a final decision.
Not Exploring Remote Work Opportunities
Working from home, even part-time, could be more beneficial than quitting entirely. Don't hesitate to inquire about options to reduce your in-office hours.
Not Seeking Assistance
Whether it's from your workplace, friends, or trusted colleagues with household tasks, asking for help can lighten your burden. Consider delegating responsibilities to your partner or finding someone to assist with errands. When reaching out to your employer, inquire about potential accommodations for your situation; you might be surprised by their willingness to support you and your child. For instance, they may adjust your schedule to allow time for weekly speech therapy appointments. Approach these discussions as a business negotiation rather than a request for a favor to achieve better results.
Underestimating Your Worth
Remember how powerful and resilient you are. As a special needs mother, you’ve learned valuable skills like negotiation, advocacy, coordination, and patience. Stand tall and confident in your career. You’re valuable and have the potential to make a difference.
Neglect To Explore Entrepreneurship As An Option
You may have never considered it as a viable path, and you might not know where to start or what business ideas you could pursue. As challenging as it may seem, we must take that leap of faith and try. If there’s something you love then why not explore the options of building your own brand?!
By avoiding these prevalent pitfalls, you can start on the initial step towards establishing your own business. Our Moms Who Hustle Summit was undoubtedly a remarkable event. I do believe as caregivers we think it’s only going to work for my child if I only have a open schedule and stop working. There are ways to still be a full time worker and care for your child’s need. The key bullets above shows there are ways…. Yes mamas there are ways.
You made some good points!
